My friend and I stayed at Ester's Homestay during the Olympics and Paralympics in Rio and we could not have been happier. Ester and her husband went out of their way to make us feel at home. They showed us around the local area and even took us to their favourite pizza shop. The location in Vila Da Penha makes it easy if you want to travel around Rio but don't want to stay in a tourist area. It has a bus at the end of the street which takes you (in 5 mins) to a Metro Station or a BRT which will take you around the city. If you are on a budget but want to see some of the real Brazil then make sure you book with Ester. The room was fairly basic but had hot water, was clean and had a comfortable bed. Breakfast was also provided every morning even when we were leaving very early. Ester even looked after some of our bags for us while we went traveling for a week. I can honestly not speak highly enough of this homestay.

Ester & her husband Ilias were excellent hosts. Their lack of English speaking skills was limiting but we got by fine with the help of Google Translate. Their daughter Isadora is occasionally there and speaks excellent English. Braz de Pina is about 1.5hr commute from Cocacabana, and about 1hr from the Galeao International airport. Transport via a nearby hub (Vicente de Carvalho) gives access to BRT Bus Rapid Transport, metro and train. Local bus stop is within 100m of Esters home. The accommodation is basic at backpacker hostel standard. Bedrooms can be locked and I did not experience any security risks. Reasonable standard of cleanliness. Three small shared bathrooms but don't expect high pressure pr endless hot water. Basic air conditioning in most rooms but in August was not required. Complimentary wifi access was good. Laundry facility useful. Local supermarket, restaurants and bars close by but quality is variable. Breakfasts typically breadrolls, cheese and sometimes sliced meat. Fruit salad some mornings was very good. Regarded as a relatively safe neighbourhood before midnight. Street music and general noise often featured til early hours so earplugs useful if you are a light sleeper.

Un lugar muy acogedor, realmente te sientes en familia, la atención brindada fue de principio a fin de mucha preocupación. Más que una parte dónde alojar es un hogar.
