KHANABADOSH - India's first travelling B&B!
Ever visited some place, where you felt you belonged? Where you breathed easy and your mind became quiet…where you instantly saw beauty in everything you looked at, not because it was there…but because you were never more, in the now. Didn’t the thought to someday live there for a stretch of time, cross your mind? It crossed mine. So I decided to live the thought and put a foundation under proverbial castles…to have a place of my own, in all such places. A beautiful, luxurious, modern place—in soulful touch with the local earthiness. I waved goodbye to a plush corporate job; gave up on the car, the house, the big-city and a lot of other stuff, I’d called life. So I reset life, KHANABADOSH was born and I became the person who carries her home on her shoulders. First stop Mashobra. I love the mountains—the magical quality of mountain air that coaxes you to chug, not sip; the slow pace—of your feet, heart and soul; the need to stop ever so often to gaze amazed, hear in awe or smell in rousing. If you too share my passion, consider this an invite to stay at a beautiful place—my home. Discover…explore from its comfortable warmth…eat what I cook for you or feel free to cook for yourself. Get your pets if they’d be comfortable (and allow others to be). Listen to folklore from local story-tellers, while you secretly marvel at the intricate network of veins on their hands and openly laugh accompanying their toothless smiles. Children, women, men of all ages, colour, religion or sexual orientation are welcome. Artists, writers, poets and people who appreciate their skills will especially rejoice. You’d want to return, for sure. Here, in Mashobra or who knows where. For, Khanabadosh will surely move when it needs to as it’s blissfully oblivious of boundaries and gleefully aware of soul-stirring places.

About the Area

Mashobra, at an altitude of 2500 m, is well connected to Shimla via the historic Hindustan-Tibet Road which was constructed by Lord Dalhousie in the year 1850. Boasting of gorgeous views, dream like locales, thick Deodhar forests and lovely weather through the year,it could easily have been the quieter cousin of the more noisy and crowded Shilma, which is why it attracts travellers who come looking for solitude and some time exclusively for themselves and with nature. Mashobra is perfect in any weather. The summer is warm with a little nip in the air early mornings and late evenings. Monsoons turn the area lush green and while travellers may not be able to step out as often as in other seasons, the romance of sipping on steaming coffee, a book in hand, is not lost on many. We have a spate of guests who just come to watch the rain beat down endlessly on the roof and see the skies being set on fire every evening! The winters in Mashobra are white, sparkling and great fun. Clean crisp air fills your lungs as you trudge through snow, mesmerised at the stark contrast of the clear blue sky and the pristine white of the snow.

House Rules

It’s a home. Not a jail. And yet…it’s a home. Please stay like you’d stay at yours…mindful of the sensitivities of other guests and your host.

Adhering to the checkout time will be of great help to us, especially if we have a reservation for the same room that day. However, if there’s no such urgency…the timings will be relaxed, without your saying so.
You won’t find any ‘No-Smoking’ signs at Khanabadosh. As you alone, are in charge of your lungs. So light up, if you must…just don’t light us up.

As mentioned, we are a green-loving joint. Please join us in our endeavour to save electricity, recycle water and produce compost. You’ll find duly colour-coded waste receptacles all over Khanabadosh. Please help us in keeping the waste suitably segregated. Incidentally, did you know that it isn’t just the kitchen/ vegetable waste that goes into a compost pit. Cardboard, newspaper, clean paper; coffee grounds & filters, corncobs, eggshells and nut-shells; cotton and wool rags, dryer and vacuum lint; flowers, leaves, plants, pine needles, vegetables and fruits; sawdust, wood chips, grass and yard trimmings; teabags; AND even hay & straw are merry compostables. So now you know…please abide/ take a pledge and oblige.

Smoking Rules

Smoking is allowed outdoors only.
